Curiosity is only human

Why are we creatures of habit? As a keen foodie, or rather a 'particular' foodie I often find it hard to divert from my much loved coffee cafe, where I know what I am ordering, have a certain level of expectation met and satisfied, and I can find my groove on the chair I sat on yesterday.

When it comes to my morning coffee, I don't want to make rash decisions, I just want my normal coffee, made the way the barista knows I like it, and even with the thought in the back of my mind that I should 'try' somewhere else for a change, I can't help feeling that I would much rather avoid the disappointment of finding out it was not worth my time or effort or I was left at the counter waiting to order, or after ordering I didn't get my coffee for 35 minutes...."patience is a virtue" they say but how long is long enough??

I just wish, that curiosity whisper on my shoulder would be quiet and stop suggesting that I have a look around at other venues. Curiosity has a very strong influence, and after awhile when I think "oh..bugger it" off I go and check out somewhere different for a change, and a sticky beak.
Mostly, nothing compares, and I come 'home' (back to my loving cafe) with the satisfaction that I tried it, it was ok, but not great so I am never going back...
Sometimes however, it can make a pleasant change, with interesting menu items or decor to muse, a fresh range of magazines or a newspaper you can always obtain.

SO what keeps us so loyal when that happens? Is it the little things of our loving cafe that we appreciate; like the owners interaction with their customers, or the fact that staff know your name, or that maybe you are a pain in the arse but you get served promptly, the music is turned down in your area and a newspaper suddenly comes available? Now that takes YEARS of training a new cafe to do....

When I say 'particular' foodie, I am just that. The food can be fair but its the little "particular' things that have to be spot on. A friendly hello should be free and genuine, coffee should be served within 10 min at the most unless specified there is a wait, an smile of acknowledgement from the owner or the manager, a second round of coffee offered without having to leave my chair, clean tables, and un-hassled staff who enjoy the culture of the business and act like its their own.

ahh..here comes my second coffee now....
